Land acknowledgement

Land acknowledgement and support for all peoples struggling towards their independence:

Espace de la diversité recognizes that its offices, found in Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang (Montreal), are situated on the unceded traditional territory of several First Nations groups, on which they lived and traded. We likewise recognize the Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) nation as the guardians of this land, and that the Anishinaabe nation maintains strong links to this territory. It is through this perspective that we regularly collaborate with Indigenous artists, authors, workers and institutions, who actively participate in the design and organisation of activities at the heart of Indigenous knowledge, culture and literature.

As an organisation pursuing a decolonial approach, we seek to highlight our solidarity with all peoples across the world who, still today, live under the yoke of colonisation, and whose resistance movements we affirm. We wish to equally express our solidarity with those peoples whose independence was hard-won, but who nevertheless continue to suffer the deleterious economic, political and social consequences of their colonial past. The EDLD is founded on the bridging of struggles, solidarity and a respect for histories long-silenced. At Espace de la diversité, we believe literature to be the seed through which struggles against all forms of oppression, a reconciliation founded on social justice and reparation, and a living-together based on friendship, can all flourish.

Note: strongly inspired by the land acknowledgement of UQAM’s Groupe de recherche interdisciplinaire sur les affirmations autochtones contemporaines (GRIAAC) and UQAM’s Colloque international se mobiliser par l’art.
